My formal introduction to art came
after moving to England from Zimbabwe, twenty years ago.
I took an A level in my mid-forties and then did a BTEC
Foundation in Fine Art. Since then I have been developing
along several lines.
My work falls loosely into three categories – figurative
work and landscape into abstraction being two of them -
and stems from layered exploration into the relationships
between space, colour, shape and movement. I work with a
variety of materials and mediums but mainly use brush and
palette knife with oils and acrylic, preferring to paint
from observation. Keeping the energy learnt in life
drawing is important to me and joining a life class
whenever possible to try and capture repeated movement is
still an exhilarating challenge.
Tonal studies and cropped images of ordinary subjects –
often informed by the angle of a room, doorway, entrance
– form the basis of much of my painting and faced with a
beautiful view, I'm more likely to turn and find a less
obvious detail. The colours and memories of Africa still
influence my painting and I’m inclined to see a landscape
in terms of blocked sweeps of colour.
