I paint landscapes mainly in oil - both
plein air and imaginary. There are certain recurring
images: dead trees (stag oaks) and powerful skies.
The landscape is, for me, in some ways an allegory for
the human condition; life, death and resurrection.
I have painted seriously for over 20 years and have
exhibited in the Laing Open at London's Mall Galleries in
1998; at various Peterborough Open Exhibitions (PEGS) at
the Museum; and additionally with the Peterborough and
the Welland art societies.
I have been involved in adult community education, and
have recently participated in art activities at a local
primary school. Art history is a particular passion of
mine, especially the Victorians; notably the
Pre-Raphaelites and the Newlyn School.
Recently I have been painting in the Castor and Water
Newton area, and I hope to explore the effects of light
on familiar scenes during the coming months. I am
particularly interested in painting contrejour (against
the light), and find this very challenging for obvious
reasons. During the coming spring and summer I hope to
paint more sunsets as well as early morning scenes,
provided I can get out of bed in time.
