A gardener for less than ten
years, I love the idea of an exotic garden: bananas,
cannas, palms; pushing the boundaries of gardening and
design. Equally as important as each plant, texture,
form, water, reflection and colour play important roles
in the interplay between specimens.
I’ve tried to create different areas for different moods:
one has a sense of the jungle about it, each plant
jostling with another for space, creating bustle and
excitement; another is less dense in its design, creating
tranquillity – a contemplative space.
Most certainly NOT municipal planting, my garden is
post-modern; dynamic. The plants take centre stage;
design, though important and sympathetic, is secondary.
The living works of art in this garden, I wish the plants
to make the statement and carry the ‘show’.
As a photographer the same rules apply: form, texture,
subject and colour are the important elements of my
subjects.
The garden, as artist’s studio, is an ever-changing
palette of colour, and sculpture of both form and texture
with one important difference – nature claims some
control!
