The impulsion to make
visual comment on an emotional response has continued
throughout the course of my artistic career.
My recent series of paintings are based on my responses
to specific composers’ music. I listen to music as I
paint, mostly jazz and early 20th Century classical, and
this has a reflection on the colours and mood in which
the work evolves. I paint in gouache, applying collage to
create abstract images depicting the music of Vivaldi,
Wagner, Prokoviev, Stravinsky and Gershwin, to name but a
few. They are a development from my previous paintings of
musical instruments in a surrealist context.
I still continue to study life drawing in pencil, pastel
and clay; I feel this is an extremely important part of
maintaining ‘observation’, crucial for any artist. I
studied the human form at the Camberwell School of Art
for a time after the war. The figure is also a
fundamental part of my puppet making. Puppet making has
been my family’s profession dating back to the mid
1800’s. I have continued this tradition and produce
puppets for commissions.
