My formal introduction to art came after moving to England from Zimbabwe, some twenty six years ago. I took an A level and then a BTEC Foundation in Fine Art and a further sculpture course alongside a teaching post in design and craft. Looking back through those years I realise how often the colours of Africa still influence my paintings.
Focusing mainly on life painting, the energy and immediacy of form and movement is captured directly in paint and reflects the freedom of expression that years of observation allows.
Abstracted landscape is a parallel subject that stems from the desire to express relationships between space and colour. I work with a variety of materials and mediums using mainly brush or palette knife with acrylic, charcoal, water soluble graphite and oils.
Just occasionally I have the opportunity to make a 3D piece of work and the circle of this - sculpture informing painting informing sculpture - is invaluable.
